The lag in the basic research of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has restricted its scientific and technological innovations. Effective convergence and integration of information technology will remarkably transform the landscape of TCM basic research. It is important to identify the objectives of TCM basic research, efficiently merge the TCM information resources and technology, promote information exchange, add new TCM theories, improve clinical skills, and thus optimize the TCM innovations. By promoting the integration of TCM with socioeconomic development, fastening the transitional TCM, creating research incentives, establishing new policies/mechanisms, and adopting a more interconnected, open, and demand-driven environment, the basic research of TCM will advance in a more scientific and innovative manner.
