近代思想史上，学者对自由主义的关注常常停留在西化派知识分子身上，近代中国命运多舛，政治自由主义在中国并未能成功，原因多归结为救亡压倒启蒙。而西化派知识分子所提倡的“自由”却很少被质疑。自由的内涵除了政治自由主义，更有文化的自由，文化自由体现着传统儒学中特有的自由观念。梳理钱穆对西学的看法，可以感受到文化自由的观念与精神。文化自由实可以作为对政治自由的补充与制衡，展开儒学与自由主义更为内在的对话。从传统学术的精神中发掘出的文化自由观，将可以开创出儒学中西会通新境界的良好平台。

In modern intellectual history,scholars studying on liberalism usually pay their attention on the intellectual which have the opinion of westernizationist themselves,they commonly assumed that saving the nation overwhelmed enlightening at that time is the reason of Political Liberalism failed in suffered modern China,while “liberalism”,advocated by westernization-ists,is seldom queried.Connotation of liberalism includes both political liberalism and culture liberalism,which shows the characteristic concept of liberalism in Confucianism.By teasing out the Qian Mu’s opinion on liberalism,we may experience the concept and spirit of culture liberalism.Culture liberalism actually can be a supplement and balance for political liberalism,and help us find the indeed connection between Confucianism and Liberalism.It will bulit self-confidence and find the rational spirits for Confusion by exploring view of culture liberalism in .
