State of the shale gas resources in Hubei province and the shale formation condition in west Hubei area are in -troduced .Effect of the sedimentary environment on the shale gas reservoir lithofacies characteristics and its spatial distri -bution , biological characteristics of the shale deposition and the abundance and types of the organic matter are analyzed . It shows that the sedimentary environment of early Cambrian and early Silurian in west Hubei area is favorable for the formation of shale gas reservoirs .
