成书于金代的《三国志平话》中的关羽“面如紫玉”;元杂剧三国戏中的关羽开始有“赤面”或“丹脸”的直接描述,如“红馥馥双脸胭脂般赤”“绛云也似丹脸若频婆”等。蒙古族审美文化认为“赤面”或“红脸”象征着武勇,是好汉或英雄的体征之一;而《三国志演义》中关羽的“面如重枣”(疑原为“面如挣枣”)之赤面的描写来自元杂剧三国戏而不是《三国志平话》,从而可推知《三国志演义》的作者就是《录鬼簿续编》所记载的戏曲家罗贯中。

The color of Guan Yu’ s face in The Stories of Three Kingdoms edited in Jin Dynasty was like purple jade, but in the Yuan Opera his face was described as red as dates , or as red as rouge, etc.Red face represents bravery and valor in the Mongolian culture .The depiction of which Guan Yu ’ s face was as red as dates in Romance of the Three Kingdoms was from the Yuan Opera of three kingdoms , from which a conclusion could be drawn that the author of Romance of the Three Kingdoms is the dramatist Luo Guanzhong recorded in The Sequel to the List of Ghosts.
