同治八年冬，方宗诚和史梦兰同应曾国藩之聘，先后来到保定，遂成莫逆之交。最初，二人在出处思想和治学观念方面多有碰撞，并有深度交流。方宗诚主张“目见闻确”“由博返约”，史梦兰论学持“沟合汉宋”“公允无门户之见”。之后的十余年，二人书信一直来往不断，有著述互赠，有诗文相酬。史梦兰对与方宗诚的“南向之约”一直耿耿于怀。史在七十四岁时撰《方存之七十寿序》给予方高度评价。

The eighth winter of Emporer Tongzhi’s reign, Fang Zong-cheng and SHI Meng-lan formed intimate friendship after their successive arrivals in Baoding for the appointed posts by Zeng Guo-fan. At the very beginning, they had frequent communications on their diverging attitudes towards official post and the ways to do the research. Fang believed in the importance of getting accurate resources and sublimation of thought based on extensive reading. SHI held a rather fair thought on choosing talents in ignorance of their social status. The ensuing decade saw incessantly correspondences between them and dedication of their books or poems to each other. SHI remembered all the time for Fang’s invitation for a trip to the south and was sorry for the unfulfilled appointment. He regarded Fang highly in his congratulatory letter for Fang at Fang’s 70th Birthday when he himself was 74.
