楚漆艺术是武陵山片区即渝、鄂、湘、黔相邻地区的一大文化特色，主要是利用天然大漆在器物表面进行髹饰。中国漆工艺在“历史上的第一次突飞猛进、兴衰繁荣”主要是由楚国漆器的发展而显示出来的。楚漆艺术的装饰技法有彩绘、描金、贴金、镶嵌等，形成了一种特有的漆器文化。磨漆画是漆器装饰的平面化。长期以来，因过于注重工艺，而被列入工艺美术的范畴。现代的磨漆画教学、研究与创作大多采用聚氨酯化学漆以实施，带来的误导与对人身体的毒害在社会上影响不小，所以不少画家对此画嗤之以鼻。但由于研究的学者甚少，对磨漆画的是非争议一直处于搁置的状态，严重影响了磨漆画作为独立画种的发展进步，同时也影响了楚漆艺术文化价值的挖掘与提升。通过考察武陵山片区的楚漆艺术，发现磨漆画和楚漆艺术是一脉相承的关系，磨漆画乃楚漆艺术的现代延伸。

Chu lacquer art is a major cultural feature of Wuling Mountains area including Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou and Chongqing region, mainly using natural lacquer to decorate the objects’ surface. Chinese lacquer craft "for the first time making a spurt of progress and prosperity in history"is mainly because of the development of Chu lacquer ware. Its decoration techniques, including painting by colors, tracing in gold, covering with gold and inlaying with mosaic, form a unique lacquer culture. For a long time, the lacquer painting has been included in the industrial art category because of too much emphasis on technology. As a result, the modern lacquer paintings using polyurethane chemical paint to teach, study and create, brought misleading and toxicity to the society. However, because of few research on the lacquer painting, the controversy is suspended, which has seriously affected the development of lacquer painting as an independent form of painting, and also affected the discovery and improvement of Chu lacquer art and its cultural value. Through the investigation of Chu lacquer art of Wuling Mountains area, it is found that the relationship between grinding lacquer painting and Chu lacquer art is inherited, which means lacquer painting is a modern extension of Chu lacquer art.
