1975年出土于西安北草滩的北周白石龛像制作于西魏末至北周初年,这组龛像应是北周时期佛教建筑上的镶嵌艺术品。它在龛像样式、造像特点、艺术风格等方面与同时期西安地区出土的北周造像有很大差异,展现出一种全新的时代风貌,在继承关中、长安地区造像特征的同时,又融合了当时中原及南朝地区佛教造像因素,并对毗邻的天水麦积山石窟北周造像产生了重要影响。

The white stone statues of the Northern Zhou dynasty discovered in Beicaotan, Xi’an in 1975 were engraved between the Western Wei and Northern Zhou dynasties. They were inlaid in the Northern Zhou Buddhist architectural style and differ greatly from the contemporary Northern Zhou images excavated from Xi’an in niche style, iconographic characteristics, and esthetic style. They exhibit a brand new style that not only inherits the iconographic characteristics of Guanzhong and Chang'an regions, but also absorbs iconographic elements from the Central Plains and the Northern Dynasties regions, exerting significant influences on the Northern Zhou images in the adjacent Maijishan Grottoes in Tianshui, Gansu province.
