最早见载于《尚书》中的和夷源于西北氐羌系民族。汉以降，少见于文献记载，但到了南诏时期被记称为“和蛮”。从其族属源流来看，南诏时期的和蛮虽源于和夷，但也属于南诏国境内之乌蛮别种。南诏时期对和蛮记载的不多，一方面说明汉族史家对和蛮的认识不够深入和全面；另一方面说明其时和蛮处于南诏治下，与南诏国境内其他被统治民族一起处于被统治被奴役的地位。前南诏时期，和蛮分为东、西两大片但其居地其实是相连的。南诏立国后，所有和蛮均处于其治下，大部分聚居于开南（银生）节度、通海都督辖境内，部分仍不断南迁，形成今日和蛮之后裔---哈尼族跨境而居之势。虽然南诏时期部分和蛮的经济有了较大发展，但其内部发展极不平衡---大部分和蛮的经济、社会发展还处于相对落后的状态，民族关系也较为纷繁复杂。

The earliest record of Heyi group appeared in Shang Shu,and this group originated from the Diqiang people in northwestern China.After the Han dynasty,Heyi group was rarely seen in the related literature until the Nanzhao period when it was recorded and called as Heman group.From the aspect of the origin of its clansmanship,Hemans in the Nanzhao period were not only related to Hey-is,but also to Wumans which were the natives of Nanzhao.The record of Hemans in the Nanzhao pe-riod was inadequate because the Han historians did not have a good understanding of them on the one hand,and on the other hand Hemans were slaved and ruled by Nan-zhao during that time.Before the Nanzhao period,Hemans lived mainly in two areas,the east and the west,but their habitation was connected.And after the establishment of the Nanzhao regime,all of the Hemans were under its rule,most of whom lived under the jurisdiction of Kainan(Ying Sheng)Jiedu Administration and Tonghai governor,and the rest migrated south,whose descendants are today's Hani ethnic group in the cross-border area.During the Nanzhao period,though some Hemans enjoyed a fairly good eco-nomic development,most of them lagged behind in their socio-economic development with complicat-ed ethnic relations.
