“复调音乐大师”巴赫通过高超的复调手法，将复调音乐发展到了极完美的境地，巴赫金则将复调引入小说理论体系，而南非后殖民文学代表人物J.M.库切将音乐和小说的复调性渗透到他的文学创作中，2007年出版的小说《凶年纪事》在形式上和内容上都表现了故事的单声部纵向发展，而且还体现了不同声部的横向发展。三个声部的合音，组成了一曲完整而又跌宕起伏的完美乐章。库切通过不同的叙述角度塑造独特的人物、故事情节、叙述艺术，对文学与政治、文化与民族等诸多重大问题展开探讨，以此体现独特的审美特征。
