白蛇故事流传至今，且文本内容随时代变迁而改变，其中人物形象之法海，并非故事中无关紧要的形象，从《清平山堂话本之西湖三塔记》，到张恨水的《白蛇传》等六部作品中，随着故事文本内容的流变，法海形象呈现出了清晰的嬗变轨迹，主要出现了正义道士收妖、得道高僧救红尘、善妒佛徒假慈悲、不相干的拆散者、佛衣肉胎的形象嬗变，随之也具有功德圆满、狼狈进蟹、模糊升天的故事结局。

In the six major works about this legend, such as Qingpingshantang Huaben-----The Three Pagodas in the West Lake and the Legend of White Snake of Zhang Henshui,Fahai’s image embodies a clear transmutation with the plot development. The main transmutation contains a Taoist priest with a just cause subduing demons, a enlightened eminent monk saving the world of mortals, a Buddha with great jealousy showing crocodile tears, an irrelevant person to break up others, a mortal with a Buddha’s making up. He also has an ending of rounding it off, hiding in the crab when in a dilemma, going up to heaven vaguely.
