海内“恶溪”知名者有三：浙南处州的恶溪，为恶最甚，时间又长，最早出恶名。后经治理，变成好溪；浙东台州的恶溪，为害较小，时间亦短，故恶名不大。后经治理，变恶为善；岭南潮州的恶溪，因有鳄鱼而畜产尽、民以穷。中唐驱鳄后，遂无祸患，改名意溪。史志与诗赋多涉及恶溪，所指各异，解读时须加甄别。
해내“악계”지명자유삼：절남처주적악계，위악최심，시간우장，최조출악명。후경치리，변성호계；절동태주적악계，위해교소，시간역단，고악명불대。후경치리，변악위선；령남조주적악계，인유악어이축산진、민이궁。중당구악후，수무화환，개명의계。사지여시부다섭급악계，소지각이，해독시수가견별。
In China there were three well-known“E Xi”---evil rivers:the one in Chuzhou of South Zhejiang was the most evil and the earliest evil river in history. This one was finally dealt with and turned into a beneficial river benefiting local people;anther one in Taizhou of East Zhejiang was a lesser one in terms of the damages that its floods resulted in and was therefore not that well-known as the first one. This one was also well dealt with;the third one to the South of the Five Ridges in Chaozhou was known as an evil river for the crocodiles in it,which destroyed the livestock and thus made local people poverty-ridden. In the middle of Tang Dynasty, the crocodiles in the river got controlled and the river was thus renamed Yi Xi. E Xi--- evil rivers were often mentioned in various ancient Chinese annals,prose and poetry. However,the referent was different,and the readers should therefore be cautious while decoding and be capable of discriminating.
