战国时期的著作中对仇由国君受智伯大钟而亡国的记载颇丰，仇由国君因此也被作为贪图享逸的典型而备受责难。然而从仇由国当时所处的社会环境来看，则会发现其受钟有一定的合理性。春秋中晚期，戎狄族与华夏族经过数百年的相互交流，礼乐器乃国之重宝的观念已固化在戎狄统治者的头脑中。而仇由国深居晋东山地，境内战争相对较少，国家安定，人民乐业。兼之晋国实行戎索和和戎政策有年，仇由国君对晋文化颇为向往。而宫廷向来是社会时尚的引领者，在以娱乐为主要功能的乐文化鼎盛时期，仇犹国君亦不能例外。且乐器大钟在当时是实用器，实际价值颇高。故而，迎取一套大钟不仅可以满足仇由国君引领时尚和巩固权威的心理，而且可以获得一笔价值不菲的财富。
