汪文宣作为《寒夜》中最具悲剧性的人物，其悲剧性很大程度上源于自身放弃型和自谦型的性格。在自身对安全与发展的合理需求不得实现的情况下，汪文宣放弃型和自谦型的性格使其用忍受的方式逃避生活，正当的需求发展为病态要求，并最终导致了自身的毁灭。通过对汪文宣这一形象的创造，巴金也实现了对自身的反思与超越。
