The sinologist understanding of the Confucian poetic function is connected with the"representation"theory. Both the acceptance and adaptation of the western"representation"theory by James Liu and the understanding of the philosophical differences between eastern and western literary theories by sinologists like Eugene Ouyang displayed their understanding of the Confucian poetic function. While analyzing the relfections and expression of Chinese poetry, they overtly or covertly embody an idea of the"representation"which originated from the western poetics.
