In order to enhance and extend the world energy and chemical base without adding additional carbon to the environment , straw biomass , which was rich in cellulose and hemicelluloses , can be refined into biofuels by fermentation.The structure and composition of straw biomass was introduced , some typical pretreatment technologies including physical and chemical methods were reviewed , and process and biological methods were compared.Moreover, the production of straw ethanol and butanol by fermentation of biomass was especially discussed.It was necessary to develop efficient and environmental pretreatment technologies for the industrialization of biofuels production from straw biomass.In addition , applying continuous fermentation or fed -batch fermentation process and reconstructing inhibitor tolerant strains can reduce the manufacturing cost and enhance the fermentation efficiency.
