The structure and properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were presented briefly. CNTs had excellent adsorption capacity, but the adsorption of pollutants in wastewater was limited. The surface modifications of CNTs such as covalent modification, non-co-valent modification and modification using low temperature plasma were introduced. The differences in adsorption effect on different pollutants were summarized. Surface modification was advantageous to adsorption capacity on metals ions in water. The adsorption effect of various modified functional groups on organic pollutants was different. It was pointed out that the adsorption competition and improve the selectivity were ways to the future.
