The development of the Muskingum method from an empirical method to a method with physical basis is discussed, and the development process is divided into three periods: the period to investigate the method based on experience, the period based on the characteristic river length theory, and the period based on hydraulics. Main previous conclusions revealing the physical meanings of parameters x and K of the Muskingum method from different aspects are summarized. The historical background of the successive routing technique, which was put forward by Chinese scholars, and its significant contribution to the Muskingum method are discussed. The spirit of scientific inquiry and the scientific thinking method implied in the development of the Muskingum method may inspire researchers nowadays.
