20世纪上半叶,西南边陲小镇石门坎创造了震惊中外的“教育神话”,伯格理等人采用独特的办学方针、教育模式以及管理体制,推动了石门坎乃至整个西南地区教育的蓬勃发展。其所展现的许多行之有效的经验对当代西部民族地区的农村教育仍具有重要的启示意义。

In the earlier 20th century, Shimenkan, a border town in southwest China, created an "ed- ucation myth". Pollard, a British missionary, adopted unique educational policy, education mode and management system to promote the education level of Shimenkan and even the entire China' s southwest area, and he has been a huge success. Shimenkan' s "education myth" still has important reference val- ue in the contemporary.
