Yamamoto Syugoro＇s The Flowers on the Pine Trees depicts women from 3 different angles ： the absolute authority and the submissive family status, the greatness and tragedy of self-sacrifice and the unfairness between the loving and the loved. Through vivid descriptions, the story shows a real picture about how women live in a real samural family. The desciiptions fo- cuse on the tragic but strong women who live a hard life of being samurai and compliments on the their self-sacrifice, thus re- vealing their submissive roles in the family. Furthermore, they show that women tend to self-negate themselves. Finally, the article concludes with the opinion that the study of the Japanese women cannot be separated from the study of Yamamoto Syugo-
