Ambrose Bierce, an American short-story writer of nineteenth century, was famous for his bitter irony and sharp sat- ire. He took irony as a way of thinking, and wove it into the structure of his war stories. He developed plots, characters and themes with various kinds of ironic techniques, such as dramatic irony, Socratic irony, Roman irony and cosmic irony, so as to entrust his war stories with double implications： superficially, Bierce disclosed unreservedly the evils of war, satirized the flaws of human civilization and ridiculed the weaknesses of human nature;virtually, Bieree showed great sympathy and deep comcern for the living conditions of mankind and human destiny.
