余西古镇地处江苏东部，唐代之后该处因泥沙淤积而浮出水面成为盐场，随着海岸线东移，余西成为盐业生产经营的一个据点，为防御倭寇的骚扰建成了护城河加城墙的体系。政治经济的兴盛使余西成为地区中心城镇．形成了工字型的街道格局和四面环水的龙城概貌。余西人遗存的上百座历史建筑为古镇增添了丰富的人文气息，南北文化交融的建筑风貌又使古镇形成了文化复合的地域特色，然而地域偏僻的古镇尘封已久，前景堪忧。

Yuxi Ancient Town is located in the eastern part of Jiangsu Province. After the Tang Dynasty, due to sediment deposition, the place emerged from the water and became a salt field. With the east moving of the shore, Yuxi become a stronghold of salt production and operation and in order to defend itself from the harassment of Japanese pirates, a system comprised of the moat and city wall was built. Flourishing of the political economy turned Yuxi into a regional central town and the I-shaped street pattern and the general view of the water- encircled Dragon Town took shape. Over one hundred historical architectures handed down from ancient times at Yuxi add abundant cultural flavor to the ancient town and the architectural style integrating the southern and northern cultures bring the ancient town compound cultural characteristics; however, the remote ancient town has been marginalized for a long time, the prospect is really worrisome.
