Nathaniel Hawthorne has been called "the largest brain with the largest heart" by his friend Herman Melville.He is also the largest brain with the greatest symbolism because of his excellent literary skills,especially the usage of symbolism.In his masterpiece The Scarlet Letter,he uses symbolism to portray characters.This paper is a study of symbolism especially the symbolic significance of the main character--Pearl,and tries to find Nathaniel's attitude towards the good and evil in the human being through Pearl.
