声调是台语族语言的重要特征,对于首次接触这些语言的学者来说,声调的确定往往非常棘手,方法不当常常会劳而无功。美国著名语言学家W·J·格德尼在对不同地区台语族语言进行广泛田野调查的过程中总结出了快速确定声调系统的规律,通过一组词汇可以快速确定台语方言的声调,提高田野调查的效率。

Tones are important features of Tai languages. For scholars who come into contact with these languages for the first time,tones are really difficult to deal with. They usually toil with no gain when handled them inappropriately. Having made plenty of surveys of Tai dialects in different areas , American famous linguist,W. J. Gedney found that the tone system of Tai dialects can be determined quickly by using a glossary consisting of several words,and thus can promote the efficiency of field work.
