This paper discusses on the potential of emissions reductions in the processes of denitrification and sludge digestion for wastewater treatment plants to exploit carbon source and energy from sludge. From analysis of examples in Germany shows that decomposition of sludge greatly improves the carbon emission performance of WWTP. Energy self-sufficiency is realized through anaerobic digestion of sludge.
