该研究从六安市生物多样性保护出发，对六安市4大类绿地树种进行了详细调查，并对市域植物、动物进行了统计、分析，得出六安市境内有种子植物145科、721属、1828种，水陆栖生脊椎动物500多种。根据城市绿地系统规划要求和六安市的市域特色，确定六安市生物多样性保护的原则、目标和指标，从4个层次提出了六安市生物多样性保护规划，在遗传多样性层次，划定优先保护的区域，确定优先保护的植物物种，建立市域一城市规划区一中心城区3个层次之间的物种流动通道，同时创造多样化的生境，为植物基因繁育提供条件；在物种多样性层次，通过建立植物园、风景区、森林公园、自然保护区等，采取就地或迁地保护、优势物种驯化等措施，保护和挽救物种，并对植物多样性变化长期进行监测；生态系统多样性层次，控制待恢复的生态系统的演替方向和演替过程；景观多样性层次，从景观斑块多样性、景观格局多样性、景观类型多样性3个方面确保景观多样性健康发展。最后提出了六安市生物多样性保护措施，珍稀濒危植物的保护对策。
