本论文旨在研究中国高校学生在英语学习过程中使用小品词的情况，以及小品词在其英语口语交际中所发挥的积极作用。研究所涉及的语料库包括：英国本族语者子语库，高中英语学习者语料库以及中国高校学习者语料库。基于对这三个同类语料库的分析比较，此研究主要专注于两个层面：小品词在上述语料库中的分布频率及语篇功能。研究结果表明：随着英语国际地位的增强和中国高校学生口语水平的提高，学生在英语口语交际中对于小品词的使用频率和类型逐步增加；对于有限的几个小品词的依赖性逐渐下降；对于小品词每个特定交际功能的使用有所缓解；但对于小品词的使用类型及丰富的使用方法仍具有局限性。研究进一步表明中国高校学生对于小品词使用频率和类型的掌握一定程度上体现了其口语交际能力，小品词可以作为衡量英语学习者口语流利性的一个重要指标。研究发现为高职高专老师带来积极的启示：鼓励学生在英语课堂上使用小品词是增强其英语口语沟通能力的有效策略。为了确保英语课堂的活跃以及学生能够快速实现英语口语交流，增强他们对小品词语篇和交际功能的理解以确保正确使用小品词的教学方法刻不容缓。

This paper examines Chinese college English learners’ use of small words in oral communication. The researching corpora include:the International Learner English Corpus---English native speakers corpus, Chinese college students English corpus (LINDSEI) and Chinese high school students English Corpus in accordance with the established principles of LINDSEI. Based on the three mini homogenous corpora, this paper makes comparative analysis on two dimensions:frequency and discourse function. The research findings show that:as language proficiency improves, Chinese English learners’ use of small words will increase in teams of frequency and types, their dependence on several small words will decrease and the communication functional usage of small words will gradually ease. This paper also indicates that there are certain limitations concerning small words usage of Chinese English learners. The study shows that the frequency and types of small words can be regarded as criteria of English communicative fluency. These findings tell us the usage of small words is a satisfactory strategy of improving oral English fluency in high school English teaching. We should enhance learners’ knowledge about small words’ rich and comprehensive functions in communication to achieve a more satisfactory English teaching effect.
