The tragic fate of Oedipus is not a result of Apollo＇s curse or his own indiscreetness, but is completely forged by himself because of his lack of rationality and morals. To be true, he figured out the Sphinx riddle as ＂ man＂, but he never meditated upon the essence of man and the way of being a man. As one of the spiritual mentors during the Axial Age of human society, Sophocles warned us with the horrible disaster of the hero that the essential differences among civilized men, animals and primitives are rationality and moral are the keys to every individual as well as the human race to control their own fate and attain happiness.
