由于国际不同文化间的交际不断增加，越来越多的人需要跨国界进行面对面的交际或到异域文化中去工作或生活，地名在跨文化交际中的意义及影响也逐渐凸显出来，受到人们的关注。通过对中西地名渊源及其文化承载的研究能帮助我们汲取西方文明的精髓，弘扬中华民族的瑰宝。同时，地名也是信息的载体，很多信息都是通过地名反映出来的，现代化的电脑信息系统都是通过把地名作为载体储存进去，并通过地名检索出来，因而地名的取定和探究在今天有着极强的社会经济效能和政治色彩。

With the world becoming smaller and smaller and the international communication of different culture getting more and more frequent, an increasing number of transnational people need more face - to - face communication or have to work or live in different cultures, so the significance of international communication and its influence begin to emerge. Geographic names are usually regarded as live fossils because the cultural connotation of geographic names is very rich and varied, which can help us catch a glimpse of mass migration, national war, economic devel- opment, feudal system , ethnical conception, historical figure and local specialty. Accordingly, studying geographic names can help us absorb the quintessence of foreign civilization and spread our Chinese national rarity. Meanwhile, geographic names are carriers of information and a large quantity of information can be reflected through them. As carriers, the geographic names can be stored into computer through modern computer system, if needed, they also can be retrieved. Therefore, the adoption of geographic names and study of it have a very powerful social and eco- nomic efficiency and carry a great coloration.
