清末民初,是中国由传统社会向近现代社会转型的大变革时期,也是我国尝试革新生产方式的重要时期。甲午惨败将中国人依托发展军事工业以自强的梦想彻底打破,促使国人深刻反思,一批有识之士开始认识到民族工业与农业的重要作用。通海垦牧公司正是在这样的背景下产生的,是我国变革农业生产方式的一次重大尝试,开创了我国农业大生产之先河,其所取得的巨大成功,不但为当时国内经济的发展提供了示范典型,即便对于当今的三农建设也有着重要的参考价值和启发意义。

The late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China was an evolutionary period changing from tradition- al society to modem society, and was an important time when people tried to innovate the mode of production in China as well. However, the fiasco of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 thoroughly destroyed the dreams that we Chinese wanted to make ourselves strong by developing military industry, and that urged us to have a profound self-introspection, while a group of people with breadth of vision became to realize the importance of national industry and agriculture. Tonghai Cultivation and Animal Husbandry Company, which was a vital trial of transforming agricultural production mode, was established in the background above. It set a precedent in modem company system agriculture in China, and its great success not only set a model for the development of domestic economy, but also of great reference value and enlightened significance for the so-called ＂San Nong＂ construction in the contemporary era.
