地理边缘区因其交接过渡的位置而使资源环境具有特殊性，使经济发展具有不确定性（落后性）．探讨边缘区经济发展规律有益于寻求该类区域的合理发展路径，改变落后状态．海南西部地区是典型地理边缘区，对其近现代以来区域经济发展的剖析中发现，其经济发展过程具有明显的初级产品与重工业化特征，地理边缘区的属性与功能在这些经济特征的形成中发挥着重要作用．地理边缘对其发展机遇（环境）、发展条件、产业选择均有影响，其中行政边缘区属性影响最为显著．

A geographic fringe zone locates in the transitional area of geographical entities. With u-nique resources and environment, the economic development of such a zone very often shows high uncer- tainty or a backward state. Finding out the development law of a geographic fringe zone would facilitate its economic development, in particular the seeking of a rational path for its development or the change of its backward state. This study considers western Hainan as a typical geographical fringe zone. By the studies on its regional economic development since modem times, it is found that the process of its eco-nomic development showed significant features of a primary products based resources and an extremely important position of heavy industry. The attributes and functions of geographical fringe had played an important role in the formation and development of its economy, and the geographical fringe affected its developing opportunities or developing environment, as well as its development conditions and industry selection. And the affection of administrative geographic fringe zone is the most significant.
