周涛长期生活在新疆，对西部雄伟壮丽的自然风光、源远流长的历史文化及丰富多彩的民族生活十分熟悉，在他的诗歌中，常常借助马、鹰、山、骆驼等西部自然中具有原始生命力或自由、刚劲、雄伟与坚韧的意象符号，将西部游牧文化精神形象化，构筑起一个立体的、雄性的、质感的新疆，有力地揭示了这一区域的精神风貌和内在气韵。
