The promoting force, technical route and development plan of European Supergrid are introduced, and the network frame and key technologies possibly applied in European Supergrid are discussed. It is pointed out that the VSC-HVDC based multi-terminal DC mesh network is a feasible solution for Supergrid and the development of Supergrid is a long-term and progressive process. The challenges the Supergrid having to be faced with not only involve the development of key equipments such as DC circuit breakers, DC/DC transformers and DC cables, but also the technical factors such as the coordinated control of DC power flow, the control and protection of DC grid, the drafting of relevant technical standards for DC Supergrid, besides, other factors such as economic factor, supply chain and social factor are should be taken into account. Finally, the progress of the first commercial item of European Supergrid is presented.
