The progress and trend of automation for iron and steel industry are mainly described from simple simulated type and single loop small close-loop system to computer control, CIMS and WIMS. Nowadays,it is entering to intelligent and unmanned system step. Measurement instruments are neces- sary in all development stage. Requirements of special measurement instruments for 13 processes of i- ron and steel production are listed. Principle, present situation and existing problems for supervisory quality sensors are described. At last, how to develop effectively is discussed.
