灵魂的独行应该是个体人本位的状态,更符合年轻读者的状态。而年龄大的读者程度不同地存在整体本位意识,因而对周国平所生产的精神食粮食用起来就没有年轻读者那样爽口。但总的来看,在这样一个物欲横流的当下,整个社会充满了激烈竞争,几乎每个人都生活在有形和无形的巨大压力之中而急火攻心,周国平先生就像一个高明的＂中医＂,所撰写的《灵魂只能独行》的散文就是他为当代中国人、特别是年轻读者对症下药所开列的疗病药方。
