Shield machine selection is one of the priorities in a shield project. Correct selection of shield model is a key to the success of the shield tunnel construction. Taking fourth tender lot for shield project of Beijing Metro Line 4 as an example, the paper introduces the principle and the basis for selection of shield machine model, and the characteristics of the sand and gravel strata in the tender lot section of Line 4 are analyzed. It systematically described the technical route for shield selection for sand and gravel strata and process of the shield machine selection.
