焦延寿所著《易林》一书大量援引了《左传》中的典故和词语，其中有不少林辞涉及到《左传》中的大夫家臣。对这些林辞一一考证后发现，这些大夫家臣一类为贤臣良辅，“忠”在他们心目中永远是处于第一位，另外，他们能知礼乐而守之；另一类为乱臣贼子，他们或敢于随意废君弑君，向君发难，或具有强烈的权欲、无厌的贪欲和龌龊的情欲。可见当时的宗法制度和君臣观念已经遭受巨大的冲击，而焦延寿援引这些林辞是借古讽今、以史为鉴。
초연수소저《역림》일서대량원인료《좌전》중적전고화사어，기중유불소림사섭급도《좌전》중적대부가신。대저사림사일일고증후발현，저사대부가신일류위현신량보，“충”재타문심목중영원시처우제일위，령외，타문능지례악이수지；령일류위난신적자，타문혹감우수의폐군시군，향군발난，혹구유강렬적권욕、무염적탐욕화악착적정욕。가견당시적종법제도화군신관념이경조수거대적충격，이초연수원인저사림사시차고풍금、이사위감。
Jiao Yan-shou quoted a lot of Allusion and Word from ＂Zuozhuan＂ to write the ＂Yilin＂ , in which there are so many words write the officialdom and retainer .After interpreting the words we can find that there are two Types about the officialdom and retainer .one of them are Sage, ＂Loyalty＂ is the most important in their hearts, at the same time they can Pay attention to etiquette.The other are Treacherous ministers and traitors.They dare to abolish or kill the emperor and have the desire for power,greed and Lust. So the patriarchal clan system and the concept of emperor and minister is destructed. Jiao Yan-shou＇s purpose is to warm the rules of The Western Han Dynasty.
