This thesis intends to carry out a detailed analysis of the structure of Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse. In this novel the traditional method of organizing a plot to push forward the progress of a novel is abandoned. Instead, the lighthouse plays a vital role in the structuring of the novel. Woolf depicts every character’s stream of consciousness around the lighthouse and thus compares and reveals the characters’ different inner worlds and personalities. Moreover, the various flowing consciousness is unified into a whole through the lighthouse on a deeper level. Woolf is experimenting with a new form of writing and has greatly expanded the aesthetic area of modern fiction. However, with its emphasis on psychology and on the human consciousness, reading such novels requires hard brain work. In her later novels,Woolf seems to have returned to the traditional methods of novel writing, which shows stream-of-consciousness technique’s limitations.
