A novel controllable reactor is introduced with magnetic flux compensation. The inductance can be changed by opening or closing multiple groups of control winding. The basic circuit structure, operational mechanism and working state is analyzed, and inductance of the controllable reactor is theoretically calculated based on circuit and field methods. By test of a small-capacity industrial model machine, its operational characteristics of control and harmonic is obtained. Furthermore, the response and harmonic characteristics of output current versus saturation are achieved. The experiment results are consistent with the theoretical ones, which verifies the correctness and accuracy of the model, and demonstrates that this kind of controllable reactor has better controllability and lower harmonic component of output current. The research result is of theoretical guidance and practical significance for engineering design and operation analysis of the flux compensated controllable reactor.
