“意淫”是贾宝玉性情方面的重要特征。因为“意淫”，贾宝玉对身边女孩儿们的言论、举止显得非比寻常。他在追寻美与理想的驱动之下，于女孩儿们的世界里饱尝了愉悦，但也在现实和理想的矛盾中饱尝了痛苦。试从“意淫”的初指，“意淫”的表象和动因，“意淫”的悲剧内涵三个方面，由浅入深地对《红楼梦》中“意淫”一词做出释义。
