明清话本小说有诸多作品叙写了高僧坐化一事。从坐化特点看，高僧坐化吻合了人类学中“通过礼仪”理论，是一个通过仪式，象征了一个人生命修炼的过程。这一行为仪式具有塑造人物的立体性格、扩张故事的叙述方式、强化作品的教化功能等叙事效应。

There are many vernacular novels during the Ming and Qing dynasties described the dignitary ’ s passing away while sitting cross legged .As far as the dignitary ’ s passing away while sitting cross legged is onerned , it conforms to "rite of passage"theory of anthropology and it is not only a rite of passage but also the symbol of a person and the process of life cultivation .This be-havior ritual has sorts of narrative effect , for example , manufacturing the characters of stereo character , expanding narrative style , strengthening the educational function and narrative effect .
