北魏初期，宗室的界定沿袭着拓跋部的直勤传统，凡是神元帝拓跋力微的子孙都属于宗室的范畴。孝文帝时采用五服制改革宗室结构，只有“五属”和“四庙”子孙才能成为宗室。但是，并非每个宗室成员都有宗室属籍，疏属或谋反都会导致宗室属籍的丧失。北魏宗室属籍的管理机构是宗正卿。北魏宗室属籍者享有许多政治、经济和司法特权。

북위초기，종실적계정연습착탁발부적직근전통，범시신원제탁발력미적자손도속우종실적범주。효문제시채용오복제개혁종실결구，지유“오속”화“사묘”자손재능성위종실。단시，병비매개종실성원도유종실속적，소속혹모반도회도치종실속적적상실。북위종실속적적관리궤구시종정경。북위종실속적자향유허다정치、경제화사법특권。
In the early period of Northern Wei Dynasty , the definition of imperial clan followed the Zhiqin tra-dition of Tuoba clan, Emperor Tuoba Liwei’ s descendent all belonged to the imperial clan .Emperor Xiaowen a-dopted Wufu system to reform the clan structure , only the descendent of Wushu and Simiao could be taken as the imperial clan .However , not every clan members could have the clan membership;estranging or rebellion will lead to the loss of the imperial clan membership .Zongzheng Qing was administrator in charge of imperial clan member-ship.In the Northern Wei Dynasty , those who owned the imperial clan membership could enjoy many political , e-conomic and judicial privileges .
