唐代沿袭周代以来视槐树为三公之位的文化心理，在长安的街道与宫廷广植槐树。但是，考察唐诗发现，槐的政治意蕴已经退化，从政治符号衍变成了情感符号，并成为一个重要的文学意象。槐意象既是一个时间意象，也是一个空间意象。对于游子而言，槐暗示其与故乡的距离；对于举子而言，槐暗示考试的时间。诗人的时空体验是槐意象的文学意蕴得以建构的内在机制，游宦、赴举等新的文化是外在动因。唐诗中的槐意象传达出流寓者的漂泊情怀、举子的科场心态。

당대연습주대이래시괴수위삼공지위적문화심리，재장안적가도여궁정엄식괴수。단시，고찰당시발현，괴적정치의온이경퇴화，종정치부호연변성료정감부호，병성위일개중요적문학의상。괴의상기시일개시간의상，야시일개공간의상。대우유자이언，괴암시기여고향적거리；대우거자이언，괴암시고시적시간。시인적시공체험시괴의상적문학의온득이건구적내재궤제，유환、부거등신적문화시외재동인。당시중적괴의상전체출류우자적표박정부、거자적과장심태。
Following the Zhou Dynasty, the locust tree was highly worshiped in the Tang Dynasty, so locust trees were planted everywhere in the palace and Chang' an street. However, study of the poems in the Tang Dynasty found that its political implication was lessening and shifted into an emotional symbol and an important literary image. The image of the locust tree became both a time and a space image. For those travelers far away from home, the locust tree implied their distance from home; for those candidates for the imperial examinations, the locust tree implied the examination time. Poets' experience of time and space was the inner mechanism of its literary image, the external reason was the new culture of travelling officials and candidates for the imperial examinations. The image of locust tree in the poems of the Tang Dynasty expressed those travelers' wanderings and exam mentality of those candidates for the imperial examinations.
