The problems on original process of low alloy steel gear were analyzed. Based on rational design for gating system, risers and pad, the casting process was improved to realize directional solidification. The gear castings with better surface quality were obtained by strengthening quality control, including the hot spot with chromite sand, the core center with limestone sand and hot cutting risers.
