在士向知识分子的近代转型中，晚清小说家是颇具代表性的群体之一，他们典型地体现出士的近代转型的状况和特征。通过小说创作，晚清小说家自身切实地进行着士的近代转型，同时还以其小说作品去改良政治，救治社会和“新民”，从而启悟了其他士人向知识分子转型，他们对士的近代转型进程起到了推动作用。
재사향지식분자적근대전형중，만청소설가시파구대표성적군체지일，타문전형지체현출사적근대전형적상황화특정。통과소설창작，만청소설가자신절실지진행착사적근대전형，동시환이기소설작품거개량정치，구치사회화“신민”，종이계오료기타사인향지식분자전형，타문대사적근대전형진정기도료추동작용。
The novelists in late Qing Dynasty were a typical group during modem transformation from Chinese tradi- tional scholar-officials to the intellectuals. They embodied representatively scholar- officials＂ modem transforma- tion. By their novels, the novelists in late Qing Dynasty as scholar-officials transformed to the intellectuals them-selves, and ameliorated politics, gave treatment to society and “Xin Min”. Thereby they lead the other scholar-officials to the intellectuals.
