桃花坞木版年画是大地的艺术，是在乡土中成长起来的民间艺术。然而，随着农耕社会的瓦解和现代文明的冲击，竞一时走向衰落庶几成为“失落的文明”。所幸有识之士深怀文化信仰，担当起刻不容缓的历史使命，投入空前的中国民间文化遗产抢救工程，编就这部《中国木版年画集成·桃花坞卷》。这是用视觉人类学的方式，将其纳入“大艺术”本体论的美学范畴，既以历史的方法作纵向比较，又以比较关学的方法进行深入研究，藉以凸显年画鲜明的吴文化特色和“浅中寓深”、“俗外见雅”的地域个性，从而以民间文化的多重价值，展现出立体化与全息性的桃花坞木版年画的美学气象和生态景观，其价值已超越了一般的图画“集成”，而显示出传统文化的学术价值和现代意义。

As a form of folk art, Taohuawu Wood Engraving Pictures are rooted in the soil of popular culture. However, it was on the verge of ＂lost civilization＂ due to the disintegration of farming society and the impacts of modern civilization. Fortunately, wise men with a firm belief in traditional culture shoulder the responsibility of preserving the legacy of Chinese folk art, a task that is imperative and unprecedented. Their efforts have brought forth An Anthology of China Wood Engraving Picures ： Taohuawu Section, which embodies the approach of visual anthology and the aesthetic ontology of ＂art in a broad sense＂. The book highlights both the Wu Culture features and the local characteristics that implies ＂profound meanings in popular forms＂ and ingrates ＂vernacular and fine art forms＂. As a form of folk art with rich cultural values, Taohuawu Wood Engraving Pictures fully demonstrate in the book a live panorama of aesthetic notions and ecological scenes. In this sense, the book surpasses the average ＂anthologies＂ of paintings and reveals the academic value and the modern significance of folk art.
