Fueled with the rapid development of renewable energy, the power grids in Europe are carrying on a new round of extension and reinforcement. This paper explores the development trend of power generation structure, generation distribution, cross-border power flow and backbones of transmission networks in Europe and introduces the main projects of the main network backbones in the next 10 years. The paper studies the extension trend of the European synchronous interconnected grid which includes the Mediterranean ring, the interconnection of IPS/UPS with the continental Europe, and the prospects of a pan-European super grid. The extension features of the European main power grid are summarized, and the possible roadmap of the synchronous extension is discussed in the paper.
