Objective To study effects of vitamin A (VA) deficiency on the growth and iron intake in rats. Method Fifty two male SD rats aging 21 days were divided randomly into four groups according to their body weights and each group included 13 rats. They were normal VA and iron group ( Ⅰ ) , normal iron but complete lack VA group (Ⅱ) , normal iron but slight deficiency VA group ( Ⅲ ) and slight VA and iron deficiency group (Ⅳ). The animals were raised for eight weeks. At the end of experiment, 72 hours metabolic experiment was conducted in which the food intake of the rats was recorded and the feces were collected. After the metabolic experiment, the rats were sacrificed, the serum VA and the iron content in the feces were determined, and the apparent iron absorption rate was calculated. Results The results showed that animals in each group were generally in a good condition except the animals in group Ⅱ who were fiery and irritated, and vitamin A deficiency could induce a decrease in the iron apparent absorption rate (P 〈 0.05 ). Conclusion VA deficiency may affect iron nutritional status by influencing the iron absorption.
