The significance of coping with the soot formation in diesel engine is illustrated in this paper by elaborating on the soot's definition and its detriments. In addition, the desperate need for solving that problem is also raised after detailed anal- ysis on the influences of soot on diesel engine oil specification. From the perspective of lubricating oil, it is described that the diesel engine oil's soot dispersing property should be concerned based on the soot forming mechanism. By summarizing on previous studies on influencing factors of base oil, ashless dispersant and Ⅵ improver on oil's soot dispersing property, it is suggested that the Group Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ base oils, high molecular weight ashless dispersant, and Ⅵ improver with dispersing property should be introduced into the oil formulating system. This indicates an effective way to improve the soot dispersing property of high -quality diesel engine oil.
