The separation mechanism and synthesis methods of nano -filtration (NF) membranes were introduced. The separation mechanism of NF membranse can be expressed on the basis of the space - charge model, the fixed - charge model( i. e. the teorell - meyer - sievers model), the pore model and the electrostatic and steric - hindrance model. With the widely used of NF membranes, the methods of preparing it were attracted more attention by many research depart- ments. Several methods commonly used were mainly discussed.
