Reviewed in this article are the previous studies of SLA from sociolinguistic perspectives before Firth and Wagner ’s ar-ticle appeared, and a sociolinguistic model of SLA proposed by Preston. It is argued that future research should go more deeply in-to the manner and the results of the impact of social contextual, linguistic contextual, and time variables on the cognitive process-es presumed to underlie SLA.
